Sawada Tsunayoshi, also known as Tsuna, is the protagonist of the story. He is a self-proclaimed weakling who has long been accustomed to being used and mocked by his so-called friends. Despite his timid nature, he is observant and kind-hearted, often noticing when others are being bullied. He has deep feelings for Molly/Mari/Amemiya, a silver-haired girl he has known since they were fourteen. Tsuna is described as a coward when it comes to confessing his feelings, but he is willing to protect the fragile truth of her heart. He works part-time jobs, runs errands for his bullies, and has a close relationship with his mother Nana. He was trained by Lal and possesses contact lenses with infrared functionality. He personally applied medicine to Molly the night before the story begins, knowing she had fully recovered.
