A woman unable to have children who took in Ruan Su after a hospital staffer found the abandoned baby. Her relatives had been urging her to adopt. She gave Ruan Su a simple silver ring which became Ruan Su's most treasured possession. She fell ill and passed away when Ruan Su was ten years old.
