A legendary courtesan mentioned in a story fabricated by Jiang Yinjin. According to the false tale, Ran Niang was born a courtesan, fell in love with a scholar from Jiangnan, defied society together, and eventually married him as his lawful wife. The story was used by Jiang Yinjin to encourage Shen Mianmian to compete for a higher status.
