The husband of Shu Niang and son-in-law of Zhang Hong. He was originally a poor scholar from the countryside whose father died and mother was seriously ill. He married into the Zhang family and was initially obedient and considerate. However, he became addicted to gambling and squandered all the family wealth accumulated over three generations. He was later beaten, had his legs broken by the gambling den, and froze to death on the road home.
