Also referred to as Grandpa. He is Xuezhu's grandfather and a close friend of the late Meng Changfeng. In 1952, at age fifteen, he became a volunteer soldier and was injured in war, where he was helped by Meng Changfeng. After the war, both became teachers and built a school together. He tells Xuezhu and Meng Yuning stories from his youth about hardship and the importance of cherishing the present.
