Ming Dai's adoptive father, a retired military doctor who learned medicine while in the army. After retiring, he worked in the hospital's pharmacy/herbal medicine department. He never married and raised Ming Dai as his own after picking her up from a train station as an infant. He left behind a savings book with 2,356 yuan as inheritance for Ming Dai. He died in the room where the story begins, and before falling ill, he had asked someone to look after Ming Dai.
