Ma Xiaoming is a young man who serves as a victim in the story. He is described as a hardworking fellow who never complained. He yielded to women, looked after the elderly, and even when he was hungry he still shared some of his rations with others who were starving. Before the apocalypse, he had been an honest, unremarkable man who worked hard for over 10 years to move from the countryside to the city, where he landed a stable job, met a woman he liked, took out a loan for a small apartment, got married, and had a lovely daughter named Yue'er. All he ever wanted was an ordinary, unremarkable life with his family. However, even this modest wish proved impossible when the apocalypse struck. He was killed by Zhou Guangyi, who stabbed him in the throat with a scalpel. Ma Xiaoming wanted to expose Zhou Guangyi as the real traitor but could not speak due to the throat wound. Even in death, his eyes remained wide open, fixed on Zhou Guangyi in unwilling rage. His wife and daughter are mentioned as Honey and Yue'er.
