She treats her daughter-in-law Yang Qiujin well. She is the grandmother of Chen Tianyou. She is one of only two high school graduates in the village (referring to her son Chen Shengqing). She often comforts Tianyou in private rather than scolding him openly. She is worried about potential quarrels with gossiping women in the village.
