Lan Da'niang is an antagonist, an elderly woman who is the matriarch of a large family living in the courtyard. She is abusive toward her daughter-in-law Tian Xiao'e, beating her with a broom over food disputes. She favors her eldest son's children, keeping food for them while her own grandchildren go hungry. She is manipulative, making scenes and crying until people agree with her. She threatens to make her son Zhao Daqiang divorce Tian Xiao'e and chase her away. She is sexist, stating that girls are a waste and not worth much. Despite her aggression, she is confronted by Song Nanting, who strikes her across the face for her abusive language. She represents the oppressive older generation that mistreats women and creates unfair family dynamics.
