Jia Xiaohong is a female educated youth who particularly dislikes Yan Naqian. She is resentful of the shared work points system, claiming Yan Naqian takes twenty-five days off every month for various ailments and that this drags down everyone else's work points to the extent she cannot even afford laundry soap. She is confrontational and outspoken, publicly challenging Jiang Hongzhi at the Educated Youth Station and later asking Song Zhi loaded questions at the village meeting. She represents the frustration of the female educated youths who feel they are being treated unfairly compared to Yan Naqian. She is one of the voices pushing for the abolition of shared work points.
