Huang Xiaoxing is the grandson of Huang Dangjia, who had already died before the events of this passage. He often played in the mountains with the tree spirit and became very close to it. One day, he went down the mountain alone and ate a large rooster tied up in the village's ancestral hall. When the villagers discovered this and began punishing him, he killed the old man in charge of the punishment. His death deeply affected his grandfather Huang Dangjia, who sought to resurrect him using a dark art involving a living soul. His story is revealed through Huang Dangjia's confession during the interrogation.
