The son of the Yangzhou prefect from the He family. He studied and took the imperial examination at Qingya Academy where he was a close friend of Xiao Shiyan. He got the second rank in the last imperial examination and is now serving as a county magistrate in the border region of Jizhou. He frequently spoke about his teacher Lin Yanqing to Xiao Shiyan.
