The protagonist, a forty-year-old woman who worked tirelessly for twenty years caring for her in-laws while her husband Lu Zhoushan lived a double life. After being diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer and receiving a letter revealing the truth, she dies of heartbreak and is reborn twenty years into the past, in 1980. She possesses a mysterious storage space that was empty upon rebirth. She pretends to be confused and frightened after her belongings are stolen, secretly having emptied the house the night before to prepare for leaving her abusive in-laws.
