The grandfather of Zhang Hanlin and a Grand Academician of the Hanlin Academy. He spent his life immersed in books and dedicated to scholarly pursuits. He was Zhao Zun's first teacher and later his mentor at the Hanlin Academy, teaching him everything he knew. He spoke up in Zhao Zun's defense multiple times against court rumors of rebellion, which resulted in the emperor forcing him to retire and return to his hometown.
