Also known as Fujiwara no Saisai or Sai, a genius go board attendant renowned throughout Heian-kyo. He was wrongly accused of cheating, forced out of the capital, and drowned himself in a river out of regret. His soul drifts after death and follows Hoshi after she buries him. Though a dead soul unable to touch the living, he attempts to help by fanning her and shielding sunlight. He represents a tragic figure from the past whose resentment is soothed by Hoshi's kindness.
