Also referred to as Teacher Fang or Master Fan, he is the students' teacher. He is observant and caring, noticing Song Liangzuo's muddy condition and sending his book boy Peng Yan to bring him a pair of dry shoes to prevent frostbite. He teaches from classical texts including annotations. He maintains a stern demeanor and questions students about where they learned certain phrases outside of class.
