Despite having a treasury containing nearly 300,000 copper coins and 900 silver coins plus significant stores of wheat, barley, cloth, spices, and weapons, he could only maintain 800 troops. Engel is described as foolish, lacking brains and cunning, having stood at the rear of his own troops during battle and been captured because he was too close. He is under the protection of Viscount Hannie and knows Baron Joy, the nearest lord. Engel was used by Farra as bait to lure Baron Joy into a trap.
