The protagonist, born in 1950. She was the first girl from Qisi Township to attend Hongyan Women's Normal University but was expelled after one year due to her family's bad class background (her great-grandfather was a late Qing Dynasty scholar). She had excellent Russian skills from radio programs and even had a Russian pen pal.
