The protagonist's personal attendant, a young man of about twenty-six or twenty-seven, surnamed Bian, given name Yao, courtesy name Xuanming. Despite being described as of buqu (retainer-servant-soldier) origin, he speaks with elegance and moves with refinement, far more like a gentleman-scholar. He is taciturn, strict about propriety, and insists the protagonist maintain scholar dignity. However, he hides a deadly secret: he is actually a skilled fighter and avenger. He disappeared before entering Xiangyang City and returned with a severed white-haired head, having killed someone to avenge Bian Rang. He carries a memorial tablet inscribed with Bian Rang's name. Despite his murderous nature, he is competent at handling travel arrangements and knows the full names of governors and states of administration in every city and county.
