I've been thinking about this myth of Zhuan Xu severing the connection between heaven and earth, and honestly, it feels like the key to understanding the whole novel. 'If Emperor Zhuan Xu had not severed the connection between heaven and earth, sealing the passages between the Three Realms, humanity would not have become the rulers of the mortal realm.' This idea—that freedom requires separation, that humanity's greatness came from cutting itself off from the divine—is such a rich theme. And it mirrors what's happening on every level of the story. Ling Xiao herself exists in this liminal space between realms, between the supernatural and the mortal. She's a ghost-god who's been playing at being human, forming bonds with humans, all while being fundamentally other. The memorial ceremony for Taizu is about remembering the founder who built humanity's place in the world, but Ling Xiao is the one orchestrating it from the shadows. There's also this recurring motif of blood relations—Ling Xiao repeatedly emphasizing 'we're blood relatives' as justification for her behavior. Blood as both bond and weapon. The execution ground as the weakest point between Yin and Yang—death as the gateway to power. These symbols are layered and I can't stop thinking about them.
