This was a great book just finished it. Like all her books they are sweet, funny, a little sexy. All in all it’s the overcoming the adversities for me and if you have read the other books this explains a lot of the back story of the main family in this series!
I mostly MTLed the novel but was captivated by what a unique couple they made. It's refreshing to read a story where the male lead is younger than the female lead and is so devoted to winning her over. The female lead is mature and intelligent. I really loved both the male and female leads.
So, I am an avid reader who has gone through every chapter since the beginning until the most recent one, chapter 385. Here, I'll share my thoughts on the pros and cons of this novel.
Firstly, let's address the anime adaptation. Unfortunately, the first episode was a major disappointment, as it did not do justice to the novel. If I had my way, the first season would focus on the protagonist's initial escape from the first dungeon instead of the rushed narrative that spans across five volumes.
Now, moving on to the book review. The first dungeon stands out as a highlight, showcasing the protagonist's tragic backstory, betrayal, and his daunting struggle for survival. Some readers found his behavior after escaping erratic, but this can be attributed to Yue and the impending events involving the "bugged bunny." Without these factors, he might have become a heartless killing machine.
The subsequent chapters that caught my attention include the introduction of supporting characters, more dungeons, and interactions with Hajime's classmates. The final battle against the boss was particularly thrilling.
At first glance, the "Hero" of the class may appear unremarkable, but his character development in the after-story arc is where he shines. Many minor characters from the main story also experience significant growth in the extended narrative.
Honesty demands that the "Main Story" feels more like a setup for the real story. If I were to rate the main storyline independently, it'd be a modest 2 stars. However, if I solely evaluated the after-story, it would easily earn a 5-star rating. The after-story offers extensive world-building and a captivating, hidden plot that makes the main story feel like just a fraction of the total experience.
To those considering stopping here, my advice is to persevere. The true essence of the story unfolds once the main narrative concludes.
I won't delve into the changes following the first volume, as others have already discussed that aspect. Instead, let's focus on my observations:
1. "Arifureta" holds untapped potential. Although the author constructs an easily comprehensible world, attempts to introduce twists and avoid clichés fall short. The story's setting feels generic, akin to a typical dungeon RPG.
2. Some intriguing characters lack proper development, despite their potential. The harem aspect is disappointing, as characters with redeeming qualities are underutilized. The few enjoyable characters are overshadowed by the constant emphasis on the MC's greatness, making the narrative monotonous.
3. As a harem/romance novel, "Arifureta" serves as a poor example. The treatment of relationships between the MC and the girls is questionable, and the author struggles to create a convincing harem dynamic. A more focused approach with a single女主角 or a limited group might have been better.
4. The MC's interactions with the female characters are one-dimensional, reducing them to mere admirers. Even when they have likable traits, they revert to trying to win the MC's affection, which becomes repetitive. The MC's interest in Yue is clear from the start, and the addition of other girls doesn't change the harem feel significantly.
5. Despite some positive aspects like well-developed moments and world-building, "Arifureta" suffers from cliches and unexplored side plots. The author introduces intriguing issues but fails to delve into them, resulting in a decent but unspectacular story.
In conclusion, while "Arifureta" has its merits, it falls short in several areas, particularly in character development and the portrayal of a harem. It's a decent read for those with spare time, but not a standout masterpiece.
Pros:
1. The main character (MC) is not an otaku, nor does he have a teenage or youthful reincarnation. Instead, he is a relatable college student with exceptional qualities like appearance, upbringing, and athleticism.
2. The story starts off with a dark tone that is seamlessly integrated, showcasing the harsh realities of society and human nature, such as rape, murder, and abuse of power by other characters.
3. The MC demonstrates authentic Japanese cultural practices, including showing respect, formal communication, and礼仪, which stands out in novels where the MC typically respects authority figures.
4. The MC's backstory is well-developed, explaining his skills and abilities without relying on divine interventions, which is a refreshing change from other works.
5. The MC isn't entirely oblivious to love and affection, adding depth to his character.
Cons:
1. Although the MC doesn't actively pursue a harem, the trope still forms organically, which may be a drawback for some readers.
2. The MC is almost invincible, making it challenging to find meaningful challenges throughout his journey.
Personal Cons:
1. Initially, the writing and editing were strong, creating a cohesive narrative. However, around chapters 30-40, the quality significantly deteriorates. The use of Japanese words代替 English ones, inconsistent naming, and unclear intentions become glaring issues, causing a drop in readability.
2. As I'm reading, the editing errors are so severe that it feels like the novel was hastily put together, as if the content was shredded and pieced back together poorly. This is a major reason why I'm considering discontinuing my read.
Regarding the "pro" mentioned, all the female companions are depicted as lolis, which might be a positive aspect for fans of this genre but a turn-off for others.
The malicious empress inadvertently led me to this captivating novel. It's quite an emotional rollercoaster; I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction as the protagonist avenged those who had wronged them – they truly deserved their comeuppance.
