Can we just talk about how perfectly You You sounds as a character? Because I need to scream about this. The author gave this three-year-old a voice that is simultaneously childish and surprisingly wise, and it works on so many levels. Take this exchange: 'What's wrong with being single since birth? A Jiu is too, and so is big brother. I'm proud to be single.' This is a THREE-YEAR-OLD saying this. And it's hilarious, but it's also deeply revealing about You You's character—she's not actually three in her mind, she's carrying memories and perspectives from six years in the future. She's a time traveler trapped in a toddler's body, and the dialogue captures that perfectly. Then there's her philosophy on love: 'Mommy says only grown-ups need to choose. Kids can have it all.' What a line. It sounds like something a child would say, but it's actually a profound statement about the freedom of childhood versus the compromises of adulthood. I laughed out loud AND felt sad at the same time. The banter between Lu Fei and You You is also chef's kiss. His exasperation versus her relentless curiosity creates this wonderful rhythm. When she says 'You You has lots of boyfriends in kindergarten' and he just... stops... knowing exactly what to say? Perfect. The silence between them says everything. And the contrast with Shi Ning's dialogue—so formal, so careful, so polite. 'Xiao Fei, am I disturbing you?' versus You You's raw, unfiltered 'Mommy! You You misses you so much!' These two women (one actually a child) represent two different ways of expressing love: restrained and proper versus open and desperate. The narrative voice itself is also doing a lot of work. It's close third person, mostly following Lu Fei's perspective, but it dips into You You's thoughts too, especially when she's watching those dating show clips and remembering her future. The author lets us hear both voices clearly, and they feel completely distinct. One thing that struck me—Lu Fei's dialogue is increasingly softening. Early on he's all '...None of your business' and dismissive, but by the end he's initiating conversations with You You, asking her about the future. His voice is changing, and it's subtle but powerful.
