This really was a good story, the way the ending is… leaves it open to a sequel. I will keep checking back to see if there is one. <3
so far very intriguing
The atmosphere in these chapters is absolutely chilling, and I don't just mean the weather. Right from the opening, there's this sense of dread - 'In the dead of winter, Yan Erlang's forehead was beaded with sweat.' The cold setting mirrors the emotional temperature of every interaction. Yan Heng's 'murderous aura' when he's enraged, the servants 'holding their breath, lowering their heads, and daring not to look' - you can feel the tension in the air. I love how the author uses the public space outside the Yan residence to heighten the drama. The crowd gathering, the old woman selling melon seeds who starts commentary like a Greek chorus - 'Well done! Shameless hussy. There are plenty of unmarried men, yet you have to seduce a married gentleman.' It's such a vivid scene, you can practically hear the street noise and feel the winter wind. Then Yan Heng glares and the old woman 'unconsciously shrank her neck back' - power dynamics played out in real time. The contrast between the outer courtyard where the public spectacle happens and the inner courtyard where the mother-in-law dispenses her false wisdom is really well done. Mother Yan 'advised her kindly' while subtly manipulating the situation. The physical space of the Yan household itself seems to reflect its moral corruption - beautiful on the outside, rotting on the inside. And that final image of Zhou Yunruo walking beside Yan Heng toward the main hall, with his 'beloved' the woman with 'a slender waist like a willow' ahead of them - it's almost cinematic. The visual of the three of them moving through the house like a slow-motion tragedy is haunting.
