Let me just say this: Pei Mu is a man of few words and the author knows exactly how to use that. When he says 'I won't die. Not only did your son die before me — you will too,' that's it. Four sentences. Fourteen words. And the entire crowd erupts. The old woman had been screaming, spitting, calling him cursed, and one line from him shuts her down completely. That's voice. That's character. And then Zhong Yizhu's line — 'It was my choice to marry him. No one forced me. No one bullied anyone. I chose this marriage myself.' Clean. Precise. No trembling, no hesitation. He doesn't raise his voice. He doesn't need to. The contrast between these two characters through their dialogue is everything. Pei Mu speaks in threats and silences. Zhong Yizhu speaks in declarations. Matchmaker Feng is the comic relief here — 'A match made in heaven — how could it not?' — completely oblivious to the tension, genuinely cheerful, paid to be cheerful. His dialogue is all flourishes and auspicious phrases, which makes him feel real in a way that's almost funny. And Zhang Guihua? 'Now that you've found a better match, of course you can say whatever you want' — that deflection, that immediate assumption that everyone is lying to save face, tells you everything about her character in one line. The dialogue here does so much heavy lifting. Every character has a distinct rhythm and worldview encoded in how they speak.
