The dialogue in this book is not just good—it's loaded. Every conversation feels like a chess match where the pieces are people's lives. Take the scene between Gu Ningxi and Steward Sun, for instance. It's barely two lines of actual dialogue, but the subtext is enormous. "When before His Highness, make sure you confess your guilt properly. After all..." He trails off. He doesn't need to finish the sentence. Gu Ningxi understands exactly what he means—confess, survive, protect your family. And her response? She "silently mouthed a word of thanks." That's it. No elaborate exchange, no melodrama. Just two people who understand the unspoken rules of survival in this world. But the real star of the dialogue is the confrontation between Gu Ningxi and Prince Zhao. Look at how sparse it is: "Since you admit your guilt, why not tell me exactly which crimes you have committed?" "I am dull-witted. I hope Your Highness will enlighten me." "For example... the crime of deceiving the Emperor?" Three exchanges. Three levels of escalation. Prince Zhao is toying with her, drawing it out, watching her realize piece by piece that he knows. And Gu Ningxi's responses—"I—" and then nothing, because she has no defense, no escape. The silence between the lines is where the real dialogue happens. The narrative voice itself is also worth noting. It's restrained, almost clinical, which makes the emotional moments hit harder. When the text says "Her life and death hung on his whim. Gu Ningxi unconsciously slowed her breathing"—that's not melodrama, that's observation. And because the narrator doesn't over-explain, we feel the terror more deeply. The author's voice feels confident and controlled, like someone who knows exactly how much to reveal and when to pull back. There's no wasted words, no unnecessary exposition. Every line of dialogue and description is doing double or triple duty.

So let me get this straight: he sleeps with her when they were teenagers because supossedly he was în love with her. He leaves the next day and although he loved for the next ten years he never stays în touch with her and hooks up with other women. She of course has all kinds of failed relationships
I absolutely love this new book. I love the characters, the fast pace and how the author brings the characters to life. I’ve read all the books by this author and this is totally different from the previous ones, but has become one of my favorites.
