I have to give credit where it's due: the dialogue in this chapter is exceptional, and not just because it's well-written. It's because every character has a DISTINCT VOICE that I can identify without seeing their name. Ju Liancheng's dialogue is clipped, precise, almost clinical. 'You are not Tang Mingzhi.' 'I cannot forget anything. Whether good or bad.' He doesn't waste words. Every sentence is calculated, and it perfectly matches his character as someone who stores information like a human library. Even his embarrassment about the hair-braiding incident comes out as a cold statement rather than an emotional confession. Pei Nai's voice is completely different—warm, slightly self-deprecating, with a dry humor that shows she's still herself despite being in a new body. 'A miracle pill,' she jokes about Elder Zhong's medicine. 'Strange temper? Who are you talking about?' when Madam Ju asks about Ju Liancheng. These little moments of wit and deflection tell us so much about her character. She's a general who's used to command, but she's also a woman who knows when to use humor as armor. Elder Zhong's dialogue is sparse but weighted. 'You will know.' 'All forms are illusions. If one sees that all forms are not forms, one sees the Tathagata.' 'Go back. Someone is waiting for you.' Three sentences, and each one carries the weight of a thousand teachings. The author could have had him explain everything, but instead, he speaks in riddles and parables, which is exactly what a Buddhist master would do. And the narrative voice itself—there's this beautiful quality where the author sometimes steps back and lets the characters' actions speak for themselves. The scene where Steward Li reports that the food 'remained untouched' after the Duke refuses to eat? No explanation needed. We understand everything about his grief from that single detail.
