The brocade itself is interesting too. It's called 'Cloud-Dream Rainbow Glow' — something ethereal and beautiful — and it gets destroyed by something as mundane as spilled ink. There's a commentary here about how fragile women's achievements are in this world. All that skill, all that effort, and it can be ruined by a single accident and then reshaped into gossip. And then there's Pei Yanshu's ink-stained robe. He becomes the living symbol of the incident. While the brocade can be hidden away or discarded, he walks around in public wearing the evidence. But instead of being ashamed, he makes it a joke. He controls the narrative of his own stain, while Shen Nianyi has no control over hers. The 'ink-stained betrothal' that the neighbors invent is the ultimate expression of this theme. A literal accident gets transformed into a romantic rumor. The author is showing us how society takes whatever material it's given — even something negative — and reshapes it into a story that serves its own entertainment. Shen Nianyi's hard work becomes a love story. Her humiliation becomes gossip. Her pain becomes someone else's amusement. What really gets me is how Shen Nianyi reacts to all of this. She's not just angry about losing the competition — she's angry because her reality is being rewritten by other people. 'How did it end up being my reputation that's the problem? I'm the victim here!' That line is the thesis of the entire passage. The ink stain on the brocade is nothing compared to the ink stain on her name.
