I have to talk about the market scene because the author really knows how to paint a picture without overdoing it. The food section erupting in shouting—"Fresh tofu! Fresh tofu! Delicious, silky tofu for sale!"—it just immediately drops you into this noisy, chaotic, alive marketplace. You can hear it. You can smell it. And then Wang Quan arrives with his three burly chefs and suddenly the whole energy shifts. The vendors become obsequious, the tofu sellers start competing, and this man who clearly has power just walks through inspecting food like he's some kind of emperor doing a palace tour. The detail about Wang Quan scratching his ear and telling them to shut up is such a small thing but it makes him feel so real. He's not a cartoon villain, he's just a guy who's used to getting his way and gets annoyed when people don't comply. And the chefs stepping in front of Lin Yue to glare at her—"Quiet!"—that's such a specific, vivid moment. I could see it like a film frame. Then there's the courtyard scene where Wang Yawei is wailing and Master Song arrives in this light blue robe with bamboo embroidery and golden threads, described as "like a proud bamboo shoot." The contrast between the noisy market and this more intimate family moment is really well handled. And Wang Shi running in his rare silk robe, sweating and smiling obsequiously—it tells you everything about his character in one image. A man who is usually too lazy to move but will sprint across a courtyard in his best clothes when someone important arrives. The cold noodles themselves are described with such sensory detail: "smooth and tender, cooling his entire mouth," "sweet—far too delicious to eat just one piece," the sour and salty version that "whets the appetite." I actually wanted cold noodles after reading this. That's good worldbuilding when the food makes you hungry.
