This book is lovely
I have read this dialogue between Shen Lingxi and Jiang Qingyan at least five times and it just gets funnier every time. "Little wildcat, you're so good at screaming—let me hear it." And Shen Lingxi's response? She doesn't even flinch. She grabs the arm, twists it, slams the face into the soup bowl, and then delivers this absolute gem: "At the beginning of life, nature is good. Ruining someone's face makes you a scoundrel." MA'AM. You cannot tell me that didn't come out of somewhere. But it's not just Shen Lingxi. Every character has a distinct voice and the author is playing 4D chess with dialogue here. Fu Jinglan's lines are short, clipped, almost mechanical. "Kneel down? Or lie here?" "Fifty, count them yourself, hmm?" "Go." He barely uses more than a few words at a time and when he does speak at length, it's usually to Mu Suizhou and it's laced with this dry, almost sarcastic warmth that he'd never show anyone else. The contrast between how he talks to Shen Lingxi (commands, threats, the occasional backhanded tenderness) and how he talks to Mu Suizhou (banter, shared cigars, childhood memories) tells you everything about where his emotional center of gravity actually is. Mu Suizhou is the comic relief but also the emotional barometer. "Shen Jinglan actually sounds quite smooth"—this man is really out here trying to negotiate his best friend into changing his surname and I am deceased. Jiang Qingyan's dialogue is all performative aggression. "Aren't you going to ask who I am?" She's trying so hard to dominate the scene and Shen Lingxi just refuses to play along. The power dynamic in that scene is absolutely electric. And the internal monologues—Shen Lingxi's curse at Fu Jinglan ("May his dolls deflate, his wife run away, his girlfriend go missing...") is pure comedic gold. It's the kind of thing that makes you laugh out loud because it's so wildly inappropriate for the situation.
