Let's talk about Mrs. Xiang for a second because this woman is a DIALOGUE MACHINE. 'You ate official food in the army. Why should you come back here and eat if you don't want to eat official food?' — this line is so perfectly toxic that I almost applauded. The way she twists logic, the way she weaponizes grammar, the absolute confidence with which she says things that make zero sense but sound like they should make sense if you're not a thinking person. Then there's Xiang Laotou, and oh man, he's even worse. His dialogue is all passive aggression wrapped in false wisdom. 'You're a grown man, why are you still quarreling with a woman?' — classic deflection. 'The future of the Xiang family depends on them' — sounds noble, actually means 'my favorite sons get to stay home while your children are told they're dumb.' The father's voice is so distinctly different from the mother's. She's loud and sharp. He's quiet and suffocating. Both are devastating. Dagen's dialogue arc in this chapter is also worth noting. He starts with controlled frustration, builds to the kitchen explosion, then retreats into suppressed agreement. His voice changes. At first he's arguing, then he's reasoning, then he's just... tired. The author tracks this shift through dialogue alone. No narration needed. Pear Blossom's lines are the best though. 'Dad, do you believe me or them?' — three words, maximum impact, zero filler. She doesn't perform emotion, she states facts. That's a character who knows exactly what she's doing. The author's narrative voice is restrained in the best way. It doesn't tell us how to feel about any of this. It just lets the dialogue do the work, and the dialogue is so sharp it cuts.
