I need to talk about Chang Dazhuang and Aunt Liu because honestly, this is the emotional core of the entire family drama and it absolutely wrecked me in the best way. While everyone else is scheming and calculating silver and bride prices, these two are just... existing together through everything. Look at this line: "Chang Dazhuang took her rough hands in his and said softly, 'Do you regret it? You've suffered so much in the years since you married me. I have failed you.'" And Aunt Liu's heart warmed and tears fell. That's it. That's the whole thing. No grand romantic gestures, no poetic declarations — just a man who finally sees his wife's suffering and admits his own failure. The fact that he's described as "slow of speech" makes it even more powerful because when he DOES speak, it lands like a hammer. Their relationship isn't built on passion or romance in the traditional sense. It's built on shared hardship, on him protecting her during the family confrontation, on her standing by him even when the whole household turns against them. The author doesn't need love confessions to make you feel the depth of their bond. Every time Dazhuang silently stands between his mother and his wife, every time Aunt Liu takes on extra chores without complaint, every time they look at their three thin children together — that's where the real emotional weight lives. And then at the very end, with him making the decision to divide the family, he's not doing it for power or money. He's doing it because he can't bear to watch her suffer anymore. I literally got chills reading that final paragraph where she starts to say "I don't regret" and it cuts off. What does she say? I NEED to know. This couple is everything. Meanwhile, the rest of the family's emotional landscape is a disaster zone — Madam Zhang's toxic control, Mrs. Lyu's desperate hunger for validation through pregnancy, Chang the Third's sneaky manipulation. But Dazhuang and Liu? They're the only ones who actually love each other, and that's what makes their decision to leave so heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time.
