I have to talk about the System's voice because honestly it is the unsung hero of this entire passage. The way it reacts to Shang Wan calling Fu Duo 'Xiao Duo' so naturally—just '...' and then internally questioning whether a villain who blends in is still a villain—that is comedy gold delivered with zero effort. And then the running gag of the System being increasingly exhausted by its Host. Every time Shang Wan says something outrageous, the System responds with ellipses. By the end it has literally learned its lesson and stopped asking what doesn't make sense. That is character development through silence, people. The System went from enthusiastic congratulator to emotionally drained coworker who just wants to clock out. But let's also talk about Shang Wan's internal monologue because it is wildly distinct from everyone else's voice. When she's talking to the System she's casual, modern, slightly unhinged: 'Tongtong, quickly check if the male lead hasn't been body-snatched or something?' And then she immediately follows up with this perfectly rational analysis about Bond Points versus Affection Points—'Affection was a momentary spark bursting from the soul. But bonds were threads flowing like a gentle stream.' That contrast between her chaotic outer voice and her strategic inner voice is what makes her feel like a real person instead of a romance novel trope. Fu Chen's dialogue is almost painfully spare. 'Three months.' That's it. That's all he says. No preamble, no explanation, just three words that carry the weight of his entire emotional confusion. The author knows exactly when to make him talk and when to let silence do the work.
The story starts smoothly and I love how detailed it is when it comes to describing the characters. I am thrilled to read more of the chapters!
Another thing. The uncle released Lillian when he knew she was a threat to Anne. Was he attempting to kill Anne. I know that we are supposed to believe that he is evil and cares about no one. Why would he want to hurt Ann? Was he attempting to get rid of potential heirs so he can have it all. Why?
