The author really knows how to paint a scene with words. Let me just quote this because it's gorgeous: "The autumn sunlight was gentle and bright; beneath the old pagoda tree in the courtyard, fallen leaves glinted like scattered gold." That's it. That's the tweet. Two sentences and I'm suddenly walking through an ancient Chinese museum courtyard in October. The image is so vivid I can feel the crisp air. And then the teahouse scene — "Brick walls, grey tiles, and slender bamboo swaying in the breeze—peaceful and secluded, far from the noise of the city." Gu Xingzhou in his dark grey cashmere coat and black turtleneck, looking like he stepped out of a poetry collection. The whole atmosphere of Guan Zhu Tang (Hall of Viewing Bamboo) feels like it was designed specifically to contrast with Pei Yan's cold, modern world. What strikes me is how the settings mirror the emotional states. The museum is all about restoration — fixing what's broken, preserving what's beautiful. The teahouse is quiet and traditional, a place where old things are valued. Even the painting they're restoring, "The Painting of Cold Forests at Twilight Snow," feels like a metaphor for their relationship: damaged, weathered, but worth saving. The worldbuilding isn't just backdrop — it's doing thematic work.
