I did not like the character very much, he is very insensitive and your writing is bad, not your spelling, if not in how you describe things and the passage of time in fact you do not even write it, you just pretend that the protagonist was there for a long time. But it's not really a farewell—it's a boundary-setting exercise disguised as hospitality. Every dish on the table carries weight. The braised prawns, the red-braised pork—these are luxury items in this era, the kind of food you serve when you want to make a statement. And then there's the courtyard scene with Lin Tingjun and Xu Jingchu, "late summer turning into autumn, and the evening breeze was just right." That seasonal transition is doing so much work. It mirrors Xu Jingchu's own transition—she's moving from one phase of her life to another, just like the weather. The Lin household itself feels like a character. It's warm but complicated, generous but with invisible boundaries. Zhang Qiuyun suggesting they move the bed to make room for a bookshelf? That's the motherly version of saying "you belong here now." But the bookshelf is also a symbol—Xu Jingchu's education is what makes her valuable to this family, not her labor or her compliance. The setting reinforces the theme: knowledge is power, and the Lin family is investing in hers.
