I need to talk about how distinct every voice is here because honestly it's impressive. Suian's dialogue is all formal and careful—"Replying to Madam, this servant recognizes all the characters in the Four Books"—she's performing humility while actually showcasing her value. That line where she tells the tooth-mother she eats plenty and just doesn't put on weight? Her stomach cramps from hunger and she's still lying smoothly. The voice of someone who has to be perfect or die. Then Chu Yi is completely different. "Since you are choosing people for me, why can't I have the final say?" That crisp, entitled voice. And then his brutal assessment of the girls—"each one is as gaudily dressed as a flower" and the threat about them sneaking into someone's bed. He's sharp, cutting, and completely uninterested in pretending otherwise. When he says "Are there not enough handsome people in this house? Having one ugly person in my study is just right"—that's not just cruelty, that's a weird kind of protection. He's defining her value on his terms. The tooth-mother's voice is practical and slightly sycophantic, switching instantly from mockery to respect when literacy is mentioned. And Mr. Lin—oh, Mr. Lin is fascinating through what we're told about him rather than his dialogue. The backstory of him tearing his undergarment to use as a white flag of surrender when the Prince of Ling rebelled? That's character revelation through narrative voice, not dialogue, and it's brilliant. The author never lets two characters sound the same.

Short chapters with looking waits for updates. The storyline is good, but if author was unable to update, could've and should've been given an ending. My advice, don't start reading until completed.
