this book is great so far
I love it! Great story... is there a sequel?
I have to give credit where it's due—the pacing in this section is really well controlled. You go from this intense, face-to-face confrontation with Hua Zaitian (who is basically having a spiritual pressure breakdown) to Yu Shen approaching with his revenge plot, and then suddenly we're getting tournament rules explained. On paper this could feel jarring, but it flows naturally because each beat resolves before moving to the next. Hua Zaitian is dealt with, the 'annoying flies have finally flown off,' and THEN Xia Ruxi shifts into game master mode. The author uses that line as a perfect scene transition marker. It's like a deep breath after tension, and then immediately ramps back up with the pagoda reveal. What I also appreciate is how the stakes are established quickly—the death simulation detail, the top five rewards, the restriction on killing each other. All of this is explained in a relatively compact space without feeling rushed. The information dump doesn't drag because it's broken up by the visual spectacle of the pagoda expanding. And ending on 'let's keep it a bit mysterious' is a smart hook. It makes you want to keep reading to find out what's actually inside. The chapter structure here does exactly what it should: resolve one conflict, introduce a new one, and leave you wanting more.
