The stakes in this section are INSANE and I need everyone to understand what Tao Wanxing is dealing with. Let's count: She's secretly married to a man who publicly promised to marry someone else. She's hiding her identity from her own husband. She's protecting her sister from the Meng family. She's working alongside the woman who's taking everything from her. And she's doing all of this while physically and emotionally unwell. "Her heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand, making it hard to breathe." The internal conflict is suffocating. She wants to leave but doesn't dare. She wants to confront him but can't. She wants to be happy but feels she has no right. And the external conflict — Zhu Yan showing up at the hospital, the risk of exposure, the power imbalance between a Governor and a rural girl — makes every interaction feel like walking on glass. What makes this so tense is that the reader knows everything and the characters know almost nothing. We know Tao Wanxing is his wife. Zhu Yan has no idea. Meng Chu is suspicious but not confirmed. Every scene is loaded with the potential for explosion. "She didn't dare look up. These things had to stay buried — they absolutely couldn't get out." This line captures the entire conflict in one sentence. The stakes aren't just heartbreak — they're her sister's safety, her reputation, her career, her survival. And Meng Chu? He's the most dangerous person in the room and he doesn't even know it.
