Okay so let me just say this first—Princess Yuyang is the kind of villain who makes you want to throw the book across the room. Not because she's cartoonishly evil, but because her motivation is so petty and human. She thinks Xie Zhi seduced Qi Songqing. That's it. Half a year ago, they shared a carriage ride and now Yuyang is threatening to marry Xie Zhi off to a pockmarked stable groom as punishment. But here's what gets me—Yuyang isn't just some random bully. The text drops this line where she whispers to Xie Zhi: "Do you really not know what you've done?" And Xie Zhi is genuinely confused. She had NO idea. She waited in a tea room for five hours. That's it. The fact that someone named Jintang "saw" her seducing Qi Songqing on the street when they were literally in a carriage together is so obviously fabricated that it makes my blood boil. And Pei Du? Oh, Pei Du. He's this mysterious figure who walks past Xie Zhi in the library and she doesn't even notice him leave. The author is doing something really clever here—Pei Du is physically present in almost every scene but emotionally distant. He asks casual questions, he lingers, he can't explain why he's at Guanxue Tower. Meanwhile Xie Zhi has completely shut him out after whatever happened before the story starts. The tension between them is delicious and I need to know what went down. Also can we talk about Pei Hong? The playboy with claw marks on his face from another woman named Liniang who's throwing tantrums outside the manor? He's already got this whole chaotic energy going and I'm here for it.
