Good novel
I have to talk about the dialogue in this chapter because it does SO MUCH heavy lifting with very few words. Let me start with the haggling scene because it's perfect character work. The buyer says 'It's only 500 yuan, if you miss me, it will be difficult for you to sell it for such a high price again, you have to think clearly.' This man is clearly trying to pressure the old man into a bad deal, and his dialogue is all business—short, decisive, no warmth. Then Shitou (the son) immediately counters with 'Big brother, 700 yuan, you take it away, how about it?'—flattering, eager, desperate. You can tell these are two completely different personalities just from how they speak. But the dialogue that really got me is between Cui Yunhan and Junjie at the end. Junjie's teasing about Old Cui being different after marriage—'it's only been a while since your sister-in-law left, and you're looking forward to it'—this is natural, brotherly banter that feels lived-in. They've clearly known each other for years. And then the moment Junjie says 'Old Cui, you can't mess around, if your sister-in-law finds out, it won't end well'—that's the dialogue equivalent of a gut punch. The casual tone makes the seriousness hit harder. Zhu Nuannuan's dialogue is interesting because she switches registers depending on who she's talking to. With the old man, she's respectful and warm ('Grandpa, your cow can be saved'). With Liu Zhenzhu, she's confident and slightly playful ('my sister is helping me with skin care'). But we never get her inner voice in this chapter—she's always performing, always managing how others see her. Which makes Cui Yunhan's suspicion at the end feel even more threatening, because she has no idea he's questioning whether she's who she says she is.
