Best book to read and I can't wait to see what next on the next chapter all caught up
Okay, I have to talk about this gift-giving sequence because honestly it is one of the most satisfying plot moments I have read in a while. On the surface it looks like a simple family gathering scene, but the author uses it to accomplish SO MUCH narrative work. First, it establishes Shi Qingqian as someone who is prepared, thoughtful, and socially intelligent. She anticipates everyone's preferences—tobacco for the men, snow cream for the women, shell oil for the eldest sister-in-law. The plot could have easily made this a bland happy family scene, but then Li Guihua shows up and everything changes. This is where the real plot engine kicks in. Li Guihua's greed creates conflict, and instead of having the male lead swoop in to resolve it (which would be lazy writing), the author lets Shi Qingqian handle it herself. She takes back the gifts. That is a power move that completely shifts the family dynamics. And then the subplot with the red envelopes—Li Guihua trying to steal the children's money, getting caught by Xu Huaiguo, and then being forced to return it—that is a perfect secondary conflict that reinforces the main one. The author is building a pattern here: greedy people get exposed, and the protagonist doesn't need to be violent or dramatic about it, she just lets consequences do the work. But here is my question: is Li Guihua going to hold a grudge? Because this kind of humiliation rarely goes unanswered in family drama novels. What happens when she decides to retaliate?
