For a taste of the Beats, Jack Kerouac's 1966 Satori in Paris (19,980) is a possibility. Satori is clearly labeled a novel by its publisher, Grove Press, but nearly 20,000 words may be a bit generous on my part; it was difficult to calculate because of all the white space. There are several one- and two-paragraph chapters. Satori was published not long before Kerouac died in 1969, but it definitely has the flavor of the author's 1957 classic On the Road. Like the classic, Satoriis glaringly autobiographical. The main character, Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac (no less), travels to France to track down the origins of his family name. Also like Kerouac's classic, Satori in Paris is at times a bit risque; therefore, not all teachers would be comfortable using it in class.

It took me two years before it all finally sank in and I was able to accept it and breathe again. No hard feelings though because even if I was not sure if it was fake or not, I received "love" from my parents and could visit them every weekend though I preferred not to.

Warning - this author has the horrible habit of leaving sequences open ended.for example not in book to avoid spoilers but same premis: *daughter was kidnaped*MC promises to find... next chapter mc continues a week long crafting and training session forgetting everything about the previous chapter, only to end up coincidentally running into the same kidnapper 10 to 20 odd chapters later.this sequence of events that gets mentioned but overlooked or started 20 chapters later is a frequent occurence and annoyed me enough that i wish i knew before reading it.
