You just found out he's not even the protagonist, you've been calling him annoying, you literally said 'for the rest of his life, he did not want to see this troublesome and noisy Lu Dantao ever again' — and yet here she is, heart pounding, thinking about whether he escaped safely. The author really understands that emotional attachment doesn't care about logic. There's this one moment where Lu Dantao is huddled behind a rock, wondering if the night sky is the same as back home, and wondering if the male lead got away. 'Although he was arrogant and she found him annoying, she still did not want him to get hurt.' That's it. That's the whole romance arc in one sentence. And then Xue Yao's perspective — 'he had no intention of continuing to entangle himself with her' — but watch his eyes. Watch how he 'swept over her legs, which looked like they might give out and drop her to her knees at any moment. The corner of his lips moved ever so slightly.' The guy is clearly not as indifferent as he's pretending to be. This push-and-pull dynamic where both characters are putting up walls but clearly care about each other? I'm here for it. Also, the fact that she saved him, he saved her, they're bound together by mutual rescue and neither of them will admit it? Peak romantic tension. I'm not okay.
