Okay so let me just say this: Shen Zhengze ordering an extra bowl of wontons without anyone asking him to is one of the most quietly devastating character moments I have ever encountered in this novel. Think about it. He sits alone at a table. Jiang Mo serves him. He eats slowly, savoring every bite like it's the most important meal of his life. And then Han You casually drops that he ordered twelve bowls — ten for the men, two for himself, and one extra bowl for the Lord. One extra bowl. No fanfare. No grand declaration. Just Han You knowing, without being told, that his master would want more. And then Shen Zhengze himself goes to the neighboring stall and buys two steamed buns — mediocre buns that he can't even taste — because apparently the wontons weren't enough. This man who feels nothing about food is suddenly hungry. And the only thing that satisfies him comes from her hands. But here's what really gets me — Jiang Mo's reaction to all of this. She has no idea who he really is. When Iris warns her about the Prefect finding out, Jiang Mo just shrugs it off: "I haven't even met him, why should I care what he does?" Can you imagine? This man who is essentially her employer, who could destroy her with a word, and she's already planning to leave him the moment she has enough money. She's not afraid of him at all. And that indifference? That's what makes their dynamic so electric. He's drawn to her because she doesn't want anything from him. She's drawn to her food because it's the only thing that makes her feel alive again. They're orbiting each other completely unaware. And then there's Nuomi — honestly, Nuomi is my favorite character in this entire passage. The way she talks to the buns like they're living creatures, the way she gets genuinely excited about drawing lots for her order, the way she immediately notices the candied hawthorns and screams internally — she's got so much personality packed into a supporting role. She's Jiang Mo's mirror, really. Both of them find joy in small, tangible things. Food. A good deal. A warm meal after a long day. I keep coming back to that image of Shen Zhengze eating those wontons slowly, deliberately, like he's trying to memorize every flavor. What is he memorizing? The taste? Or the fact that for the first time in who knows how long, he can feel something? And who made it possible? Her. Jiang Mo, behind that veil, with those peach-blossom eyes full of confusion and anxiety, serving him bowl after bowl without knowing that she just gave a numb man his senses back.
Alright, let me start by saying that I believe those who gave this novel negative reviews haven't truly experienced the typical trope of a boy-meets-girl romance, followed by a tsundere character giving the protagonist a hard time for comedic effect. Honestly, I started reading this because I had seen the manga, expecting a generic isekai story. But this turned out to be the most invigorating novel I've come across.
Unlike other works where the main character constantly gets beat up for cheap laughs, this one features a strong protagonist who exudes confidence. The clichés are there, but they're executed cleverly, similar to My Hero Academia. The main female character actively tries to recruit him into a harem, and honestly, who could blame him when even night battles can't defeat her? If you despise that overly naive, self-righteous character type, this novel might just be your cup of tea. It's got smugness, humor, sweetness, and a healthy dose of badassery - around 40-60% of the book, depending on your definition of awesomeness. And if you're a fan of firearms or weapon enthusiasts, the main character's arsenal is practically a harem of adorable gadgets.
It's true that Egostic, the main character, might have an intense fascination with Stardus, but my own obsession lies within the captivating narrative. Despite the MC coming across as a bit infatuated and the female lead (FMC) having a complex demeanor, these aspects don't detract from the storytelling. The author's skillful portrayal keeps readers eagerly anticipating each subsequent chapter.
