The visual storytelling in this chapter is absolutely insane. Let me just start with the grapes. Wuji peels grapes with a long blade and somehow makes them look like limbless torsos with tiny remnants of arms and legs still attached, pale juice trickling across a crimson plate. Xie Chengze's reaction is just... "That's so badass." And Wuji genuinely doesn't know what that word means and then compliments him back. This scene is grotesque and funny and somehow tender all at once. Then you have Wuhen's lychees—"the pyramid-like neat pile of lychee flesh arranged on it." Obsessively perfect. Contrast that with Wuji's chaotic grape corpses and you immediately understand these two characters without a single line of exposition. The author is worldbuilding through fruit presentation and I am not okay. The scene outside Cheng Huan Palace is equally vivid. Ministers crowding around like vultures, Chen Yushi arriving with a simple food container while everyone else brings gift boxes, the minor official from the Ministry of Revenue looking increasingly distressed holding his donation slips. And then the eunuchs from Jade Lotus Palace burst in carrying rosewood chests that are "straining under the weight." The contrast between the gilded luxury inside the palace and the petty corruption happening at the gates is painted so clearly. Even the Persian wool blanket and the jade divan—these small details make the setting feel lived-in and real.
