I love the story's she weaves! I won't spoil it for any readers but if you are like me have plenty of tissues ready towards the end. I loved following the development of the characters here and the ending was perfect!!!!

The worldbuilding in this book is not subtle and I love it. Every detail grounds you in this time and place—the meat tickets, the cloth coupons, the supply co-op, the donkey cart that only comes once a week. When Jiang Tian walks into town and the streets are empty because it's mealtime, that's such a small detail but it tells you everything about daily life here. The black market alley scene where she transforms into a middle-aged woman—this is a whole underground economy operating in shadows. And the village women gossiping about her at the foot of the mountain? The word 'capitalist' being used as an accusation? That's not just background, that's the constant threat hanging over every character. I also loved the domestic scenes—the kang, the stove, fetching water, the tub bath. These aren't just set dressing, they're the texture of survival. The author makes this world feel lived-in and dangerous and beautiful all at once.
