Then the marketplace scene — this is where the worldbuilding really opens up. You can literally see the cart, the copper coins clattering onto the table, the tax collectors surrounding them like vultures. The detail about the wealthy man in 'thick cotton robe and leather boots' telling you everything you need to know about class in this world without a single exposition dump. And the tax scene! Twenty coins for the Su brothers versus one or two for vegetable sellers — that's not just a plot point, that's a commentary on how the world works. Outsiders get squeezed. Locals get breaks. Su Sanlang understanding this and paying up gracefully instead of causing a scene shows how much he's already learned about navigating this society. The kitchen scene with Old Madam Su frying pork crisps and the yellowish coarse salt — these are the kind of sensory details that make you feel like you could reach out and touch the world. The salt jar, the bitterness in the taste, the way Su Muyao notices everything. This isn't just background, it's the texture of daily life in a way that makes the fantasy elements feel grounded.

This story had my attention from the very beginning! I LOVE the way Nox loves Lilac! It’s hard to say which one of her stories are my favorite because they’re all great but this along with Violet and Ash (a must read btw) are definitely in my top 3! Lilac is so badass!
