the author paints vivid pictures in the readers minds. loving this story!
'The room was as stiflingly hot as a burning candle.' That opening line in Chapter 1 is EVERYTHING. The author doesn't just describe a bedroom—they describe a PRESSURE COOKER. And then immediately after, the steward knocks and Pei Yanzhou's coldness makes 'the room feel empty in an instant.' One sentence, that's it, and the temperature drops so fast you can feel it. The Guogongfu itself is a character. These high walls, the remote courtyards, the rain-soaked corridors—every scene feels claustrophobic in the best way. I love how the author uses weather to mirror the emotional state: the stifling heat of the bedroom, then the 'autumn wind' growing colder as Song Jinyin walks away, then the 'cold wind blew' making her body feel 'as frozen as ice.' It's not just atmosphere, it's physical manifestation of her isolation. But the scene that absolutely DESTROYED me was the jade pendant rolling across the floor. Think about it—her mother's only gift, the one thing she had from before she was sold, and it just CLATTERS to the ground during the punishment. The visual of that cheap jade pendant stopping right as the maid raises her arm for the fourth slap? I actually gasped. The pendant represents everything Song Jinyin has lost: her mother, her childhood, her identity outside this house. And Pei Yanzhou picks it up like it's nothing. The servants gossiping in the corridors, the Secondary Wife's half-measures with the maids, the way the Ye family's arrival disrupts the entire household's power structure—this world feels ALIVE. Every corner has eyes, every whisper has consequences. I can see this as a drama and the production design would be incredible.

I'm reading this book again for the 3rd time. I honestly can not wait for the 2nd book to be released. This is a must read book.
