If you perceive this novel as a clever satire of the overused clichés found in typical Asian dramas catering to female audiences, it transforms into the most hilarious tale ever. Our feisty and cunning heroine, Bai Xiao Xun, expertly exploits her 'White Lotus' image, aiming to win over seven male leads – each embodying the stereotypical hunk – and a rival woman. The author ingeniously employs absurd clichés, like sudden amnesia post-trauma and constant assault, weaving them into the narrative for non-stop laughter.
Bai Xiao Xun is a remarkable protagonist, genre-aware and quick-witted, making her irresistible to love. Despite some of her male leads being extreme 'yandere' characters, witnessing their manipulation by her astute tactics remains endlessly entertaining. What's more, with the series complete at 96 chapters, it avoids burnout, providing a satisfying conclusion.
The only minor issue lies in the initial school arc, which can be sluggish and momentarily lose reader interest. In that part, Bai Xiao Xun appears weak and unassuming, but persistence pays off as the pace picks up once she transitions to the 'real world.' So, even if the series starts slowly, stick with it, because the excitement soon follows!
I find myself unexpectedly enjoying this novel, which primarily revolves around the romantic relationship between the main character (MC) and the male lead (ML). The plot is straightforward, so if you're looking for a story filled with intricate twists and turns, this might not be your cup of tea.
On a personal note, I appreciate the MC. Initially, I feared it would be another clichéd, sweet character, but the author has done an excellent job in crafting a likable protagonist. The MC is an ordinary reader with a regular intellect, reflecting what a relatable young man should be in literature – someone who retains the big picture but not always the details, capable of skipping through the story without any extraordinary abilities. Despite this, he demonstrates a willingness to learn, positivity, and genuine warmth, which complements the ML well. The ML holds great respect for the MC, though the MC often struggles to navigate the intrigue around him due to his naivety (yet he finds his own ways to protect others).
The MC's character doesn't require being overly powerful or pull off impressive schemes; his authenticity contributes significantly to the narrative and supports the ML's growth. The way the MC expresses love to the ML is pure and heartfelt, showering him with affection openly and honestly, which resonates with the ML, who may have had enough of deceit and hidden insecurities.
If you're seeking a light-hearted read to uplift your mood, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Similar titles you might enjoy include "The Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish," "Heart has Ling Xi," "Thinking of Deer Fei Fei," and "The Actor Who Walks on, Seeking to Be a Baker."
I appreciate the concept and the characters in this story, but as I progress, I'm unsure if I'll continue. I've given it a 3 out of 5 because there's potential for improvement. The excessive focus on non-consensual, aggressive sexual encounters, especially where the woman is repeatedly dominated by the supposed love interest, raises concerns. It's not what I was expecting from a "smut" label, and this type of portrayal doesn't appeal to me.
I hope for the characters to communicate openly and healthily, without expecting the女主角, who has experienced abuse, to instantly trust and feel secure. The current treatment, where he isolates her and threatens to leave if she doesn't迎合 him, fuels her trauma rather than healing. The "obsessive love" tag can encompass a broader range of emotions, without resorting to controlling and abusive behavior.
The story had a promising start, and I genuinely wanted it to explore a different side of that theme. Unfortunately, the current direction detracts from its potential.
