An interesting story. I was so happy when Millie left Dan, it takes a while for the story to progress but it gets better with each chapter.
I need to talk about the tomato scene because it is one of the most vivid moments in this entire chapter. Qiao Jiajia is sitting there eating a small tomato that her grandmother warmed in hot water because she was worried it would be too cold for a child's stomach. The author describes how she bites a small hole first to suck out the juice before nibbling the flesh, making sure her clothes stay clean. This is such a specific, sensory detail that just transports me straight into that moment. I can feel the warm morning sun on my skin, I can smell the vegetable patch, I can hear the neighborhood waking up around six or seven in the morning. The worldbuilding here is not about grand descriptions of cities or elaborate settings. It is about these tiny domestic moments that make the story feel real. The Qiao family lives in a three-bedroom apartment with a shared outdoor space where each household has a small vegetable plot. This is not some luxurious setting, it is a modest working class life in what feels like 1980s or 1990s China. And the author makes it feel incredibly alive. There is the bamboo cradle cart that the grandmother pushes, the thin floral patterned blanket that covers the baby, the sweet pumpkin porridge, the snowflake cream that the mother-in-law buys at the department store. Every object, every detail, it all adds up to a world that feels lived in and tangible. What I love most is how the author uses the environment to contrast the two families. The Qiao family has their own vegetable patch, their own bicycle, their own comfortable rhythm of life. Meanwhile the Hu family is struggling, borrowing money, and Ma Dahua is out there watering her plants with resentment bubbling underneath. The setting itself becomes a character, showing us who has it good and who is scraping by without the author ever having to say it outright. That is skilled worldbuilding right there.

I don't understand how can FL falls for a man who has abused her so much? How can someone be this spineless & doormat? Doesn't she have an iota of self respect or dignity? Stephano is cheater,abusive scumbag. He disgusts me to no end. Why authors promote stories where victim falls for her abuser.
