Okay so this plot twist with Duan Wujiu claiming to be Liu Zhiheng's cousin is actually genius on multiple levels. First, it gives her an immediate excuse to explain away the intimate scene to Xie Tinglan. Second, it makes Xie Tinglan even more suspicious because he never heard of any cousin before. But the real plot brilliance is how it reframes everything we thought we knew about Duan Wujiu's intentions. He's not just some random pretty-faced guy who happened to show up - he's the Prince of Yan from Yongzhou, and his whole presence in this village is calculated. When Liu Zhiheng agrees to call him her cousin, she thinks she's helping, but she's actually walking right into his trap. The author sets this up perfectly by showing Duan Wujiu's internal monologue where he admits he wants to kill Xie Tinglan. That's not what a protective cousin does - that's what a possessive lover does. And Liu Zhiheng has no idea. She's so focused on escaping her engagement that she hasn't noticed the real danger standing right in front of her. The plot is basically saying: you think you're the one making choices, but someone else has been writing your story this whole time.
